ResMed, founded in 1989, is a leading designer, manufacturer, and distributor of patented medical equipment for the treatment of sleep disordered breathing. Sales in 65 countries are by a combination of wholly owned subsidiaries and independent distributors.Products include devices for nasal Continuous Postive Airways Pressure (CPAP), Variable Positive Airways Pressure (VPAP), and AutoSet systems for the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea in adults. Integral parts of these systems are nasal and face masks which are also designed and manufactured by ResMed.CPAP systems provide air at a continuous therapeutic pressure detemined for the individual in a sleep laboratory titration following diagnosis. The condition being treated is usually obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). VPAP senses the breathing cycle to provide a raised pressure during inhalation, and a reduced pressure breathing, or in cases where the CPAP pressure to treat OSA is found to high for comfort.AutoSet continuously monitors the patients level of airway resistance and adjusts the delivered air pressure, as needed, on a breath by breath basis throughout the night. Different versions are made for clinic or home use. They may be used in diagnostic or treatment mode.
